4. And particularly for this friday, it was "TRY NEW FOOD" day!
This is a picture taken at a fast food chain Wendy's. Joyce, my very awesome CGL was raving about their juicy quarter pounder burger.
Each set meal costs abt $7.50.
BUT, i did noticed how they placed a lot of advertising space on their salads!
Also, they serve whole potatoes with different flavoured toppings. I saw one with TRIPLE CHEESE.
Imagine the CARB+CALORIE overload. wooo hooo.
Food aside, this eating experience did leave me thinking about other many interesting things.
Well, in case you didnt know what Wendy's is, It is a very popular fast food chain that was in brought by the food service company, KOPITIAM, from America to Singapore.
The very funny thing is that, Wendy's actually had its presence here in Singapore back 10 years ago!
What had changed since then, to allow Wendy's to be so prosperous and successful now? And not during the 1990s?
To me, it really says a lot about our increasingly globalised diets, and how we have changed our food consumption patterns to become increasingly "convenient" and "eat out".
Supporting evidence?
Look at the boom of fast food chains from America, such as Wendy's, TGIF, and Chillis.
What is it about these fast food restaurants that people love so much?
And how can it compete itself against Giants like MacDonalds?
Well apparently, Kopitiam plans to open another 35 Wendy's branches in Singapore over the next decade.
And i get really nervous reading this. 35 branches? Most probably in place of small private businesses such as small quaint cafes, serving up slow food.
Sigh, all these giants bullying the smaller giants. Dont you think?
Another interesting fact is that when Wendy's first opened another of its chain at the basement of Wheelock Building. There was a flood that destroyed the whole place not long after!
I find this really funny.
That sometimes, business can be about luck as well.
